JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, this role will be a key position on a small team. You will be responsible for the operations of all technology within the company, including server systems, databases, storage, networking and telecommunications. The ideal candidate will have extensive Linux systems administration experience, as well as strong MySQL database and network administration skills. This role will be responsible for sharing in 24×7 on-call pager support duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Operational responsibility for the company’s revenue producing systems. This includes our Linux based servers and the networks that support them.

- Operational responsibility for the company’s internal productivity and collaboration systems. Many of these systems are SaaS-based or outsourced, allowing you to focus on higher-value IT work, but you will still be responsible for providing internal IT support.
- Systems architecture & design for new systems with an eye on cost-effective scalability, and automation, as well as rapid deployment and agility.

- Maintain data security throughout our network.

- Support the software engineering team by providing infrastructure and services as needed. Collaborate with the engineering team to ensure the stability and performance of our applications.

- Improve up-time and scalability of both new and existing systems via creative thinking. Develop tools and systems to automate systems configurations, monitoring, backups, availability, and reporting.

REQUIREMENTS & SKILLS

● A minimum of 5 years of IT professional experience

● 5+ years Linux server administration experience
● Strong, mid-to-high-level MySQL administration skills

● Prior experience supporting a production LAMP environment

● Prior AWS, Xen, or VMWare virtualization experience

● Strong systems programming / scripting experience (Python, Perl, Shell). Candidates with extensive programming skills highly favored.

● Comprehensive networking skills. Candidates should have hands-on familiarity with routing, switching, highly available (HA) techniques, load balancers, and VPNs. Experience with multiple network vendors and use of Free/Open software-based networking/security applications preferred.
● Strong English speaking and writing skills, and the ability to articulate your ideas clearly and intelligently to both technical and non-technical people

● Ability to write clear and effective documentation. We have a strong repository of systems and applications documentation which you will be expected to update, extend and manage.

● Ability to think creatively and manage your own schedule.

We are seeking an exceptional person to join our systems engineering team. We are looking for
someone who enjoys solving complex problems while contributing new ideas and techniques leading
to continuous improvement for the team.

The systems engineering responsibility is end-to-end, from design through deployment and operation. Our
focus is on engineering, installing and supporting production systems in multiple data centers in multiple geographies
and doing whatever it takes to ensure the service is reliable, available and scalable. This position requires a responsible,
team oriented, well-organized individual with strong communications skills, and the ability to handle multiple concurrent
projects while adapting quickly to rapidly changing priorities.

About you:

Linux/Unix systems administration expert; experience with large installations preferred.
A strong systems generalist with specialist expertise in at least one systems area (networking, storage, servers, etc.).
An innovator, and have probably gravitated to innovative companies in the past, startups and the like.
Resourceful. Great systems people solve hard problems in creative ways.
Comfortable moving around in the stack. For example, not a storage guy/network guy/db guy but a storage guy AND a network guy AND a db guy.
High energy drive, probably have an entrepreneurial side.
Diplomatic. There are about 10,000 ways to solve any systems problem, and you could spend all day talking about them. Often, action is required. The person who succeeds can facilitate selection of a solution with minimum feather ruffling. Have experience with web applications. Supporting these kinds of applications from a systems perspective tends to give engineers a holistic view of the application + the server + the network that is really helpful. Systems people that don’t “get” this kind of problem often have decision processes that are counterintuitive to those of us that do. Have the risk X factor. If you work for small companies you know that you have almost zero pull with vendors and are often on your own to figure out how to solve a problem. These companies are willing to accept the risk that goes along with that in order to grow. If you work for big companies, you know that this risk equation runs in the opposite direction and that you may be better off letting IBM manage the whole thing. Comfortable in one or more scripting languages, with a focus on common systems administration, task automation, and monitoring.

Responsibilities



Build, operate, scale, and troubleshoot all of Brightcove’s SaaS infrastructure.
Provide operations coverage as part of an on-call pager rotation…. once every 8 weeks
Work with other teams to make sure that the infrastructure and the applications that depend on it work harmoniously together.
Support other teams infrastructure needs on an as-needed basis.
Write tools for systems and infrastructure automation.
Collect and report on operational metrics for SLA reporting and capacity planning.
Monitor the health of our production infrastructure.

Qualifications



Has built systems and infrastructure supporting web applications in a production environment
Has experience operating a 24/7 production web application
Broad Linux sysadmin experience
Experience with and preference for open-source tools for systems management
Large installation (100+ server, multi-site) experience
Experience coding for task automation, preferably in python but in perl at a minimum.
