ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA MARITIME ACADEMY:
The California Maritime Academy is a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU) system serving a student population of approximately 850. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Deploy and maintain server and network configuration and monitoring services as part of a proactive approach to server and system maintenance.

• Install server hardware and software platforms and develop best practices for server management lifecycle, including planning, installation, configuration, security, testing, deployment and back-ups in production.

• Maintain and support print servers.

• Develop and execute automated deployment technologies for installation of server operating systems, server roles and services as well as server updates.

• Plan, design and deploy services to build and maintain a Microsoft domain environment including LDAP/Active Directory, Windows DNS, Group Policy, WINS, DHCP and related domain services.
• Support the specification, installation, configuration and maintenance of network connectivity devices and services for optimum uptime and service levels.

• Develop and establish consistent processes, procedures and detailed documentation for system and functional testing, change management, review and approval, as well as deployment plans as required by client, CSU and campus-wide projects.

• Provide status reports, metrics and project plans for education on the direction, progress, and status of current projects.

• Remain compliant with federal, state, CSU and University policies as related to all functions of IT department, including enforcement of software copyrights. Assure proper installation and registration of hardware and software with respective manufacturers and publishers.

• Proactively pursue new technologies that can benefit the University by providing operational cost savings, increased efficiency, enhanced communication, etc. Present technology proposals to the CIO for internal review and approval.

• Provide support resolving Network Operations Center (NOC) trouble tickets.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
May be required to provide IT support for up to two months on the annual training cruise aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear. Incumbent will be subject to an annual cruise physical and drug screening test prior to participation. The incumbent must also have or be able to obtain, a U.S. Passport to participate in the training cruise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience at the career level, required.

• MCTS and MCTIP Certifications (or equivalent) required

• Three or more years of experience in definition, design, deployment and maintenance of enterprise computing platforms including network devices and software, server hardware and operating systems and applications.

• Demonstrated ability to support a multi-platform network environment that utilizes technology platforms including Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Windows Deployment Services, and Microsoft system configuration and monitoring tools. Experience with Linux is a plus.

DESCRIPTION:
What is known about the world’s oceans comes largely from ship-based scientists taking samples and making measurements at periodic intervals. Now researchers led by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology at the University of California, San Diego are creating the blueprint for the Cyberinfrastructure that will allow ocean scientists to observe, analyze and interact with ocean in real time 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership of behalf of the National Science Foundation, has selected UC San Diego as the implementing organization to design and construct the information technology and networking for the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The initial Cyberinfrastructure (CI) award is for five years, with renewable funding for an additional 5 years. The OOI’s four implementing organizations are UCSD for the CI, University of Washington and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for the deployment of the interactive marine networks at multiple scales, and a “still to be awarded” fourth organization for the Education and Public Engagement program.

The core capabilities and the principal objectives of the Cyberinfrastructure for the OOI are to support:
• End-to-end data management and distribution,
• End-to-end, human-to-machine and machine-to-machine control of how data are collected and analyzed,
• Virtual collaborations between research teams to share ocean observatory resources (e.g., instruments, networks, computing, storage and workflows) and create on-demand data to model integration or assimilation,
• End-to-end capture of the ocean observatory processes in association with their data products and derived understanding, and,
• Automation of the command and control of ocean observing experiments and multi-scale measurement programs.

The observatory system resulting from this project is expected to have a broad and profound impact on the manner in which oceanographic research is conducted over the next several decades. The Cyberinfrastructure is seen as the first of it kind and anticipates setting the directions for future solutions to be developed across all the environmental sciences both nationally and internationally.

This position works under the direction of the Senior System Architect for the Ocean Observatories Initiative Cyberinfrastructure (OOI CI) program at the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). The incumbent is a senior member of the CI Architecture team.

The incumbent works in partnership with the Development Team on the development, integration, deployment and verification of the system. In particular, the incumbent develops and actively supplies seed software implementations, service definitions, component interfaces and experimental prototypes to the development team for inclusion in the development product, staged over multiple iterations and releases. The incumbent mentors and supports the developers by providing architectural intent, use cases, test cases and scenarios, expert knowledge of specific technologies and code review support. In partnership with the Operations team, the incumbent works to deliver, integrate and maintain a high quality multi-site system of systems.

The incumbent works with Project Scientists and the System Engineering team to design, plan and realize the required science and engineering objectives for the ocean observatory’s capabilities as a highly complex distributed software system, and on its architecture and inter-operations with other national e-science infrastructure. In particular, the incumbent works on functional architecture documentation, system interface definition, and software design. The incumbent applies UML-based methods and tools for system architecture documentation, software prototyping and software architecture verification.

As a senior member of the CI architecture team and as an active member of multiple integrated subsystem product development teams, the incumbent provides technical leadership in working with ten OOI development partner organizations and more than twenty OOI CI developers at UCSD and the partner organizations to assemble the OOI as a high performance large scale geographically distributed ocean observatory system of systems. The incumbent needs to understand the complex technological needs and constraints brought forward by the development partners and evaluate them in the context of the OOI CI system architecture and the system requirements. The incumbent communicates this understanding of complex systems, functional dependencies and technologies to development teams and stakeholders, and supports the synthesis of invariant functional system architecture and software implementation designs for six CI subsystems.

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Master’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or closely related field or comparable education and experience typically obtained by ten or more years related work experience.

-Demonstrated expertise in designing, building and managing complex computing systems based on service-oriented architectures. Experience directing other developers in these processes. Working experience in design or development of distributed large scale systems involving software, hardware, network and process components, and in electronic service provisioning and asynchronous message middleware.

-Can effectively communicate system capabilities by preparing thorough and articulate documentation and participate in or lead formal presentations. Familiarity with computer terminology and the ability to read and understand complex scientific articles such as journals and computer documentation.

-Extensive, demonstrated experience in reading, synthesizing and maintaining functional system architecture and software implementation designs in UML, MSC and SysML notations, applying software design tools, such as Enterprise Architect, IBM/Telelogic System Architect, Rational Rose/XDE, CORE, Model-Driven Architecture, in particular for round-trip software engineering.

Demonstrated experience in documenting architectures and interfaces according to the DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF) or equivalent. Extensive, demonstrated experience in abstracting software designs into functional and operational architectures, and to distill architectural patterns and principles. Ability to synthesize code interfaces and working software from design descriptions.

-Demonstrated experience in working with both agile and plan-driven development processes such as Scrums, Agile Development, Extreme Programming, and the Rational Unified Process. Demonstrated experience in working with large scale system engineering management processes, including configuration management and change control processes. Experience with risk management and risk- and opportunity-based process tailoring.

-Demonstrated ability in developing, describing, releasing and maintaining high-quality, high-impact web or grid service-oriented software, in particular based on technologies such as AMQP asynchronous messaging middleware, Java EE, real-time sensor networks, Web Services technologies, and agent-based autonomous systems. Demonstrated expertise in software configuration and version control tools (such as Git, SVN, ClearCase, VSS, Perforce), and in applying build tools and procedures (such as Ant, Maven, make).

-Specific expertise in developing distributed systems software and software for embedded real-time systems. Demonstrated expertise in a variety of programming languages and computing platforms including Java, Python, C, C++, database query languages, HTML, XML and service-oriented development in C, C++, Java and/or J2EE environments. Demonstrated, extensive software design experience, applying object oriented design methodologies, UML and design patterns. Experience mentoring and directing others in these technologies.

-Comprehensive understanding of computer internal architecture and design to include working knowledge of specific details and design of some variants of the Unix operating system (esp. Linux); comprehensive understanding of computer networks.

-Demonstrated experience in the requirements and interface development, functional architecture and software design, and software implementation of large-scale, multi-institutional software infrastructures. Experience in working with requirements tools such as DOORS and RequisitePro.

-Demonstrated extensive expertise in developing large scale functional system architectures and implementation designs, in collaboration with system stakeholders and development engineers in distributed development projects. Experience in working with software, hardware, mechanical and other design and development engineers.

-Demonstrated ability and willingness to act as technical expert, to track technology trends and to provide sound basis and reasoning for recommending technology paths. Demonstrated ability to mentor or direct others in their technology evaluations.

POSITION
This professional level position, under general supervision, provides technical, analytical, and process support for assigned functional areas (i.e., finance, human resources, student, financial-aid). Incumbents may review system capabilities and business workflows and recommend system or programmatic solutions. This position provides user training and technical, analytical, or process-related support. Incumbents may design, develop, and write applications for complex processes.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES

Education: A Bachelors degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience providing end user support in an integrated database environment; experience programming and developing reports, working knowledge of database interfaces and reporting tools such as Access and Safari. Experience with UniBasic and/or UniQuery preferred. A working knowledge of the Datatel Collegue computer system a plus.

• Providing mentorship to fellow Windows server administrators

• Developing infrastructure engineering and support standards

• Participating as a key member of the team to architect next generation Microsoft Windows infrastructure, capable of building and deploying systems management and automation technologies for a large body of Windows servers and Windows PC clients

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must have a minimum of 2 years implementation and support experience with SCOM and SCCM 2007 Implementation experience

• NetApp storage engineering and administration experience

• Critical thinking and problem solving skills

• Strong communication (written/verbal) a must

• Demonstrated ability to lead and influence a multidisciplinary integrated product team

• Well-developed interpersonal skills to represent the Infrastructure and Operations team technical capabilities to customers and senior leadership

• Expertise with systems architectural documentation including design specs, Visio, etc.

• Excellent troubleshooting skills

• Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE) a plus

• Enterprise server architecture experience (development and oversight)

• MS Active Directory, SCCM, SCOM architecture, design and implementation

• High transaction volume ecommerce implementation and support experience

• Advanced IIS, Exchange 2003, Active Directory, Citrix, NetApp, ESX virtualization, Microsoft SCOM and Microsoft networking experience a must

• Data Center planning and development experience

• Experience implementing in consideration of common ITIL practices and PCI, SOX controls skills

• Experience supporting Microsoft Cluster Services

• Excellent automation scripting experience with VB, Perl, WMS, etc.

• Network experience a plus

Position Description

This individual will be the focal point for our project management and user requirements for our Saas business systems . We use a custom application, Salesforce, Marketo, Quickbooks and Openair. We need an experienced analyst to manage the functionality and integration of all these systems.

Responsibilities:
• Responsible for utilizing the business knowledge to report and perform analytics on user data.
• Act as an interface between business teams and internal and external technical teams

We’re mostly a company of engineers, so in the early days the IT work was done on a “do-it-yourself” basis. Our network infrastructure grew organically as our staff increased. In the past several years, we’ve added in-house IT folks to address our needs.

Right now we’re looking for someone with Unix systems administrator experience who can augment what’s in place and put in new processes and systems to help us grow. We have a handful of “critical” Unix servers that must be available at all times and 50+ test servers. Our firewall, internet connection, networking, phone system, and power supply all need to be maintained.

Required Experience:

Administering servers running Solaris, RHEL, and OS X Server (or at least two out of the three).

Cisco maintenance and security (IOS based products such as the 2811 / 3560 / SR520)

Troubleshooting server and network performance issues

Working with and managing external technology contractors such as phone vendors, wiring contractors, etc.

Setting up and administering server-level file and mail services

Nice To Have:

Experience with Windows, SuSE (SLES 10+)

Network storage and backup solutions

VMWare ESXi deployment and maintenance

Experience with build environments and version control systems

Experience with software testing environments

Equally important is that you are comfortable in our working environment.

Many tasks (though not all) fall into the DIY rubric.
