Available: 3/1/2010

New York City Only: No Telecommute

Compensation: $500 (Monthly Retainer)

This position is for a freelance Network Administrator who will be paid on a monthly retainer. This person will be responsible for a smooth running office network and Point of Sale (POS) system with as little down-time as possible.

As with any retainer situation, some months there will be only light work (you might only have to do Windows Updates), other months a hard disk might fail and you will have to spend several hours replacing and installing software. I find I put on average about 10-12 hours of work into the store each month cumulatively (not including travel time). You will also be needed for occasional phone support, and must be willing and able to get to the store if a major problem arises. As people call and report their issues you must prioritize a running queue of these tech issues and fix them in a timely manner.

Responsibilities will include the maintenance of:

- 10 office workstations and two Apple Mac books

- Redundant NT file servers running Virtual PC and our legacy POS program Musicware

- Anti-Virus Software on all Windows machines

- Two Verizon ADSL lines, Two Routers and a 16 Port Switch

- Windows Remote Desktop access for several off-site users (RDP)

- Nightly backups and disaster recovery procedure

- Familiarity with MS Access form creation and some Visual Basic Coding is a plus

- Familiarity with PERL and DOS batch programming

* A note on the work environment – This record store is a fast-paced and occasionally hectic work environment, and as any employee will tell you it is a culture unto itself. When you are at the store (usually one or two mornings a week), you will often be working during business hours and must be able to accomplish your tasks without disrupting sales or customers. Workspace is extremely limited and cluttered, so dust and dirt in the machines are ongoing issues. It’s close quarters in the store and work areas are often in disarray. If this makes you uncomfortable, perhaps this job is not for you.
